How to Select the Perfect Photographer for Your Newborn

How to Find the Right Newborn Photographer (From a Mama Who Gets It)

Finding the right newborn photographer can be overwhelming. This is especially true when you already have a million other things on your mind.

Where do you even start?
What are you supposed to look for?
And how do you know if someone is the right fit for your baby?

As a newborn photographer here in Central Mississippi, I talk to mamas about this all the time. So let me make it simple for you.

Where do you begin when looking for a newborn photographer?

The short answer: Google and social media.

Hop on Google and search something like “Central Mississippi newborn photographer” (or wherever you’re located). You’ll find a mix of photographers. You can then explore different styles. Their websites will give you a good feel for their work and overall experience.

Social media is just as helpful. You can search the same thing on Instagram or Facebook, or take the photographers you found on Google and look them up there.

Here’s a little insider tip: most photographers, myself included, post way more often on social media. We update our websites less frequently. So if you want to see their most recent work, that’s the place to go.

And don’t be afraid to ask around.
Talk to other local mamas, friends, or even moms in community Facebook groups. Ask who they’ve used and what their experience was like. Word of mouth can be one of the best ways to find someone you feel comfortable with- especially when it comes to your baby.

What should you look for in a newborn photographer?

This part really comes down to what you love—but there are a few things every mama should pay attention to.

Consistency is key.
When you scroll through a photographer’s work, do their images look consistent? Do the babies look safely and naturally posed? You want someone who knows what they’re doing every single time, not just occasionally.

Style matters more than you think.
Do you love light and airy images? Or are you drawn to something a little deeper with more shadows and depth?

There’s no right or wrong—but you want to choose a photographer whose style already matches what you love. (For me personally, I lean more toward clean white and natural tones. I like the focus to stay right where it should be… on your baby.)

What do they provide?

This is something a lot of moms don’t think about at first.

Does the photographer provide wraps and props for your baby? Do they help guide you on what to wear for family photos?

Every photographer does this a little differently, so it’s always a good idea to ask.

In my studio, I keep everything simple and neutral—lots of white and soft tones that won’t distract from your baby. I provide all wraps and props, so you don’t have to bring anything for your little one.

For moms and siblings, I offer wardrobe guidance to help you choose pieces that will photograph beautifully and coordinate well together. I’ll walk you through it so you’re not standing in your closet the night before feeling overwhelmed.

Because honestly… you’ve got enough going on already.

It’s essential to take some time to find the right newborn photographer. Choose someone whose work you love. They should also make you feel comfortable trusting them with your baby.
