The Beauty of Chaos: Family Photos with Five Boys
If you’ve ever tried to take a family portrait with kids, you know that getting everyone to look at the camera at the same time can feel like an Olympic sport. Now, imagine that challenge with five boys! Recently, I had the absolute joy of photographing a family with five energetic, hilarious, and wonderfully wild sons.

As a photographer, I know that parents often come into a session hoping for that one perfect, everyone-smiling-at-the-camera shot—and I always make sure to capture it. We strategically placed the boys, used all the tricks in the book (including a few silly sounds and maybe some bribery), and got that classic portrait that will no doubt be framed on the wall. But once that was done, the real magic happened.

We let the boys just be boys. Mom and Dad joined in, embracing the beautiful chaos that is their life right now. And you know what? Those images—the ones with movement, laughter, and a little bit of mayhem—tell the real story of this season of their family’s life.

Perfectly posed photos are wonderful, but there’s something special about capturing the true energy and personality of a family. The ones where the youngest is not sure what is going on, the middle brother is pulling mom’s hair, and the oldest is attempting (and failing) to keep it all together—those are the moments you’ll look back on and say, ‘This was us.’

So, to all the parents worried about their kids “behaving” for photos—don’t stress! Embrace the silly, the spontaneous, and even the wild. Because in the end, those are the moments that make your family uniquely yours.
